Dato’ Dr Sharma holds a B.Sc (Ecology) from University of Malaya and a Ph.D (Conservation Biology) from University of Kent, England.
His scientific interests include the ecology and conservation of marine and freshwater turtles and tortoises; tigers, elephants, orang utans and rhinoceros; human evolution and paleozoology. He has been involved in several conservation and wildlife documentaries for Animal Planet, Vox TV, TV3, RTM,SeaWorld-Busch Gardens International and Mesa Films. Dato’ Dr Sharma has been the Scientific Advisor to Asian Geographic – The Journal of Our Environment since 1999.
He is a member to several Specialist Groups of the IUCN’s Species Survival Commission, including turtles, small mammals and Asian rhinoceros. Dato’ Dr Sharma has previously been awarded the Outstanding Young Malaysian Award in 2002 – Certificate of Merit in Science and Development and in 2005 – Certificate of Merit in Personal Achievement. He was also part of the team that won the BP Conservation Programme 1999 – Threatened Species Category Award.
